Verifying your Google Business Profile (GBP) is one of the first and most important steps to showing up in local search results. Until your business is verified, you won’t be able to manage your listing or respond to reviews, and you may not even appear in Google Maps.
This guide walks you through what GBP verification is, how to complete it using the Local Toolkit, and what to do next.
What Is GBP Verification and Why Does It Matter?
GBP verification confirms that you’re the rightful owner of your business listing.
Once verified, you gain full control of your business information on Google, including your hours, photos, services, and more.
GBP Verification via Semrush Local
Semrush Local offers direct GBP verification, allowing you to initiate, track, and complete the entire process without ever leaving the platform. If you connect an unverified GBP, a "Verification required" widget will appear.
You can choose from the following verification methods Google supports:
- Postcard by mail: Google sends a postcard with a verification code to your business address. This can take 5–14 days.
- Phone or Text: You’ll receive a code via an automated call or SMS. Only available for certain businesses.
- Email: If eligible, you’ll get a verification link sent to your business email address.
- Video Recording: Record a short video showing your business location, signage, and equipment.
Once you've selected and completed a verification method, enter the code you received.
After you enter the code, Google may take up to five days to complete the verification process. Once a GBP location is verified, it will have access to all relevant Semrush Local features. Should Google require more time to validate your request, or if it rejects it, it will highlight it through one of its statuses.
The Semrush Local interface shows the following location statuses:
- Not Verified
The location hasn’t been verified. Choose one of the available verification methods to begin. - Code Requested
A verification code has been requested. - Processing Verification
The verification code has been submitted. Google is currently reviewing your location. - Voice of Merchant
Google is taking additional time to validate the location details. - Suspended
Google has rejected the verification attempt. Action is required within your Google account to resolve the issue before trying again. - Successfully Connected
The Google Business Profile has been verified and connected. You now have full access to Semrush Local reports and insights for this location.

Once your Google Business Profile is verified, you're ready to unlock its full potential.
Here are some additional steps to get the most out of your listing:
- Complete and Optimize Your Profile: Add photos, business categories, services, and a compelling description. You can also create posts to share updates and access the GBP Insights report to track profile performance.
- Distribute Your Business Info Across Directories: Submit your business details to other high-authority directories.
- Start Collecting Reviews: Verified businesses can now receive and respond to reviews.
